It’s safe to say that launching a video game console is often a fool’s game. There hasn’t been a successful launch since Microsoft joined the fray in 2001 and the industry is littered with contenders who thought they had a nailed-on product proposition, only to find themselves out of business a few years later.

Valve both is and is not one of those companies. The creator of the wildly popular Steam digital storefront, Valve is a titan of the industry generating billions of dollars in revenue every year – albeit one with less name recognition among the general public than the likes of Nintendo and PlayStation.
