The Week in Tech: Meta unveils its AI glasses play and Fiverr lays off 30% of staff

Marketing Week’s weekly round-up of the technology stories that impact the marketing sector: from AI to martech, regulation to public perceptions.

On the agenda…

Meta is betting on a new range of smart glasses to break through into the consumer mainstream and become a must-have accessory for users around the world.

At its Meta Connect event last night (17 September), Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg revealed three new pairs of AI glasses to the world: its new top-end AI-powered glasses, the Meta Ray-Ban Display, which have a display in one of the lenses, an updated version of its popular budget tie-up with Ray-Ban, and a new sports version designed by Oakley.

The Meta Ray-Ban Display will retail in the US at the end of the month (30 September) before launching in the UK, France, Italy and Canada in early 2026. The glasses start from a hefty cost of $799 and come with around six hours of battery life, which can be extended with its collapsible charging case. The headline feature is its full-colour high resolution screen in one of the lenses, where users can conduct video calls, see a heads-up display and answer messages.
